Eman Gibson Steers New ASAM Guidance to Enhance Substance Use Disorder Treatment for Nonabstinent Individuals

We’re proud to announce a significant step forward in the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD): the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has released new guidance designed to support nonabstinent individuals in recovery. This forward-thinking approach, developed by a select team of national experts—including Integrity House’s own Chief Clinical Officer, Eman Gibson—aims to address the unique needs of patients who may not be ready for abstinence but still require comprehensive support to stay engaged in treatment.

The newly released ASAM guidance is based on a targeted review of effective engagement and retention strategies for nonabstinent individuals. As a licensed clinical social worker and credentialed addiction counselor, Eman brought her wealth of experience and commitment to inclusive treatment options to this expert committee. Through her involvement, Gibson helped develop an evidence-based framework that addiction treatment providers nationwide can use to better connect with and retain patients who may struggle with traditional abstinence-focused models.

“These new guidelines offer a lifeline to individuals who are not yet abstinent but are seeking a pathway to recovery,” Eman shared. “At Integrity House, we recognize that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. This guidance allows us to provide person-centered, adaptive care that meets individuals where they are.”

Integrity House’s active role in the development of this guidance aligns with our core mission: to ensure compassionate, accessible care for all facing addiction. The leadership and expertise of our team members, like Eman, highlight our dedication to embracing innovative, evidence-based practices that improve patient outcomes. President and CEO Bob Budsock emphasized, “Eman’s contributions underscore Integrity House’s commitment to advancing care that breaks down barriers for underserved populations, promoting recovery for everyone who walks through our doors.”

This ASAM initiative is expected to influence both national and international standards in addiction treatment, bringing much-needed support to a previously underserved group. We extend our gratitude to Eman, ASAM and all involved for their dedication to fostering recovery pathways for all.
