Integrity House President and CEO Robert Budsock recently authored an op-ed for BINJE addressing the importance of individualized care amid the ongoing national conversation about psychiatric medication.
The op-ed reflects Integrity House’s commitment to person-centered care, emphasizing that treatment decisions should be guided by clinical expertise, compassion and each individual’s unique needs. Drawing on more than 40 years of experience in addiction and mental health treatment, Budsock argues that while prescribing practices and medication management should continue to evolve, broad policies that treat psychiatric medication itself as the problem risk harming people with complex behavioral health needs.
Budsock explains that effective behavioral health care is rarely one-size-fits-all. At Integrity House, nearly 95% of clients receiving treatment have co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, requiring individualized care plans that may include therapy, psychiatric care, medication-assisted treatment, peer support, housing assistance and long-term recovery services.
The op-ed also highlights the ongoing challenges many people face in accessing behavioral health care and calls for greater investment in integrated care, expanded access to therapy and psychiatric services, stronger support for medication management and tapering, and treatment decisions guided by clinical expertise rather than one-size-fits-all approaches.
